Brown finishes in second place at NCAC Heptathlon

WOOSTER, Ohio (February 20, 2022) – After finishing in fourth place after four events on Saturday, sophomore Jacob Brown returned to the Scot Center for the second day of action at the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championship, where he earned all-conference honors, placed second overall after the final three events, and again set a new school record in the heptathlon.

Finishing the weekend with a new school record of 4,327 points, Brown landed 144 points ahead of the College of Wooster's Davis Patterson in third place while falling only 11 points shy of first-place Max Bigler (4,338 points) from Wabash College.

After securing 2,447 points during the first day of action on Saturday to sit in fourth place, Brown started the day on Sunday with a win in the 60 meter hurdles (8.96 seconds) to jump up to second place with 3,202 points, only eight points behind the leader, Zachary Guyer (3,210 points) from Wittenberg University.

Then after Brown finished seventh in the pole vault at 3.25 meters (10-08.00), he remained in second place with 3,620 points while Guyer dropped to fourth place. The new No. 1 with only one event to go was Bigler (3,679 points), 59 points ahead of Brown after tying for third in the pole vault.

In the final event, the 1,000 meter run, Brown ran his heart out around the track and put up a valiant effort, finishing in third place with a time of 2:55.72, but it would not be enough to catch Bigler, who finished sixth with a time of 3:00.50 and was able to hang on to his lead over Brown by only 11 points.

Patterson finished second in the 1,000 with a time of 2:54.38, only 1.34 seconds ahead of Brown, and Wittenberg's Sam Callinan won the 1,000 with a time of 2:54.28.

In all for the weekend, Brown had four top-three finishes out of the seven events, including an event win in the 60 meter hurdles, a second-place showing in the long jump, and two third-place marks in the 60 meter dash and the 1,000 meter run.

Brown's total of 4,327 points broke his own school record of 4,226 points in the heptathlon set earlier this month at the All-Ohio Indoor Track & Field Combined Events Championships inside the Mitchell Fieldhouse.

NEXT UP: The Big Red will head to the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Wittenberg on Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26, at the Steemer Fieldhouse in Springfield, Ohio.
