YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (January 29, 2022) – In its final tune-up prior to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on February 9-12, the No. 3 Denison University women's swimming & diving team posted a 185-104 victory over NCAA Division I Youngstown State University on Saturday.
The Big Red won all 12 of the swimming events they participated in, had first-place finishes from eight different competitors in the individual races, and saw
Alix O'Brien,
Esme Wright,
Claire Moody,
Emma Pritchett and
Tara Culibrk each earn a part of two wins on the day.
The meet started strong as the combination of
Lauren Richner,
Olivia Lantry, Pritchett and Culibrk won the 200 medley relay.
Then in the first individual race of the day, the 1000 freestyle, O'Brien (10:33.52) finished first and was followed by
Tara Witkowski (10:39.31) in second and
Taryn Wisner (10:48.36) in third.
Wright won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.10 and Moody won the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.80 seconds.
The streak of wins to start the meet continued for Denison as
Devin Javens won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.35 while
Zoe Barclay was second at 1:09.28.
The Big Red then went 1-4 in the 200 butterfly as
Emma Berdelman (2:10.15) was first, Pritchett (2:10.42) was second,
Maria Mrosko (2:12.07) was third and
Rebecca Martin (2:15.91) was fourth.
Grace Kadlecik (24.82 seconds) and Culibrk (25.01 seconds) finished in first and second in the 50 freestyle; and then Culibrk (53.70 seconds),
Amber Croonquist (54.84 seconds) and
Natalie English (55.58 seconds) took each of the top three spots in the 100 freestyle.
Moody (2:07.05) and
Grace Kacmarek (2:09.20) took first and second in the 200 backstroke; Wright (2:24.59),
Savannah Sargent (2:28.61) and Javens (2:28.81) went 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke; and then O'Brien (5:12.03) and Wisner (5:20.31) went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle.
The 12th straight win in the pool to start the meet for Denison came via the 100 butterfly where the Big Red took each of the top four spots. Pritchett (57.29 seconds) was first, Croonquist (58.91 seconds) was second, Berdelman (59.25 seconds) was third and
Avery Vogen (1:00.43) was fourth.
On the 1-meter board,
Maggie Seftenberg led Denison with a fourth-place finish and a score of 217.50. The 3-meter dive saw Seftenberg take third with 244.43 points while
Kerstyn Johnson was fourth with 243.38 points.
Denison returns to action at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, with the first of four days at the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
