New Denison field hockey season starts tomorrow

Big Red begin 2021 season as three-time defending NCAC regular-season and tournament champions

GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 2, 2021) – After capturing its third straight North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2019 followed by its first win in the NCAA Tournament since 2000, the Denison University field hockey team is set to take the field again this season in 2021.

The Big Red finished the 2019 season 17-4 overall and were 7-1 in the NCAC. This year, Denison has been picked in the NCAC Preseason Poll to win its fourth straight NCAC regular-season title.

Leading the Big Red yet again will be Head Coach P.J. Soteriades, who secured the 200th win of her coaching career when Denison defeated Wittenberg 1-0 on October 29, 2019, and is now in her 21st season guiding the squad.

Denison returns a pair of 2019 all-conference student-athletes, seniors AC Veith (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) and Maya Tumiwa (Manila, Philippines/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes). Veith, who was named second-team all-conference, totaled 12 points on four goals and four assists in 2019 while being named the NCAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player for the second-consecutive year. Tumiwa, who was honorable mention all-conference, recorded six goals and three assists through the first 19 games of the season. Also returning for their senior seasons are Maren Kraak (Haaksbergen, Netherlands/Het Stedelijk Lyceum) and Hannah Lester (Centennial, CO/Regis Jesuit).

Denison will open up its season tomorrow (Sept. 3) at home against Rhodes College at 7 p.m. inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. The team's first road game will be two days later on Sunday, September 5, at 12 p.m. at Washington and Lee University, and then the Big Red will open up conference play at home against Allegheny College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 11.

A rematch of the 2019 NCAC Championship game will take place in Gambier, Ohio, when Denison battles Kenyon College on October 9.
