How We Got Here: Denison remained in the winners bracket of the six-team double elimination NCAA Regional by defeating Millikin University 4-0 on Thursday evening. Sophomore pitcher
Charlie Fleming pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout to earn his first NCAA postseason victory. Fleming struck out eight and walked only two.
Danny Alvarez and
Daniel Spencer led Denison offensively with two hits apiece.
Ty Robinson got things started with a triple in the second, scoring the first run of the game on a base hit by Spencer. The turning point in the game came in the top of the sixth when Fleming worked out of a bases loaded, nobody out situation by retiring Millikin's 3-4-5 hitters with two strikeouts and a ground out.
Scouting Webster: Based out of St. Louis, Webster University enters today's game with a record of 36-6. The Gorlocks defeated Transylvania 4-1 on Thursday to remain in the winners bracket. Webster starting pitcher Matt Mulhearn improved to 12-1 on the season. He struck out 11 and allowed only four hits and one walk in 9.0 IP. Webster is led offensively by Kyler Kent who is batting .359 with three home runs and 29 RBI. Ben Swords is batting .351 with 35 RBI and a team-best 15 doubles. The anticipated starting pitcher for Webster will be freshman left-hander Jordan Smevoll. He enters the postseason with a record of 9-0 while sporting a 1.52 ERA. In 65.0 IP he has struck out 60 and walked 15. In 11 starts the most earned runs he has allowed in a game is two, three times.
Scouting Denison: Denison checks into today's game with a record of 24-11. Thursday's victory marked the second NCAA Regional Tournament victory in program history. Potential starting pitchers for Denison are senior RHP
Taylor Perrett (4-2, 4.25 ERA) or junior LHP
Will McManaman (3-2, 4.38 ERA). This is Denison's third meeting all-time against Webster and the first time the two schools have sqaured off in 20 years. Denison and Webster split a doubleheader in 2001.
The Rest of the Bracket: Illinois College and Transylvania will open day two. The loser of the game will be eliminated, the winner will live to see another day. That game will be followed by WashU vs. Millikin. This is a must-win game for Millikin who is coming off a loss to the Big Red. Top-seeded WashU defeated Illinois College, 2-0 in Thursday's regional opener.
