Denison women's swimming & diving opened the three-day, four-session meet versus Ohio Wesleyan. After six events the Big Red lead OWU, 94-13.
Maddie Hopkins led DU with three victories on Friday night. She placed first in the 50 free with a time of 22.66 edging out teammates
Lily Kernaghan (23.78) and
Mia Chiappe (23.91). That time set a new varsity record in the 50 free. The previous VR was 22.84 set by Carolyn Kane in 2015 and Hopkins in 2020. Hopkins also swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 free relay along with Kernaghan,
Esme Wright and Analise Cheshire. Hopkins' split of 22.19 led DU to a time of 1:32.09.
The night was closed out by a 400 medley relay win by Kernaghan,
Olivia Lantry, Hopkins, and
Tara Culibrk who posted a time of 3:46.46.
In the 500 free, Culibrk led DU with a winning time of 4:56.48. That was 2.66 seconds faster than her previous best time this season. Wright came in second in the 500 free in 4:8.61 and
Tara Witkowski took third in 4:59.26, an 8.07 second time drop.
First-year C.C. Crane won the 200 IM in 2:05.76 and
Emma Berdelman was second in 2:06.35.
Ali Burns checked in third at 2:06.52.
In 1-meter diving,
Mattie Stauss led the way with an 11-dive score of 474.38. She was followed by Maggie Seftenerg (420.08) and
Emma Hunter (355.28).

Denison completed the traditional 20-event NCAA Championship slate with two sessions of swimming & diving on Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan. The Big Red completed the slate of events with 328-49 lead over the Battling Bishops.
One night after breaking her own varsity record in the 50 free, she posted a new varsity record in the 100 fly with a time of 53.90. Olivia Zaleski (54.44) had held that record since 2009. Hopkins also won the 100 free in 50.08 while swimming on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays. Hopkins exits DU as one of the program's all-time greats. An 18-time All-American and owner of six varsity records.
In the 200 free,
Tara Culibrk won in 1:50.75 as
Mia Chiappe took second in 1:53.14.Â
Esme Wright was a two-time winner on Saturday. She dropped 7.26 seconds to win the 400 IM in 4:26.62. Wright returned to win the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.65.
First-year
Tara Witkowski won the 1,650 free in 17:07.16 and another rookie,
Lily Kernaghan took first in the 100 back in 56.74.
In the 100 breast,
Christina Crane took first with a time of 1:03.90 marking a 4.24 second time drop.Â
Olivia Lantry was second at 1:04.09.
Sydney Lenz posted a win in the 200 back in 2:03.54) and
Emma Berdelman won the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.81.
On the 3-meter board,
Maggie Seftenberg placed first with an 11-dive score of 419.40.
Mattie Stauss was second (400.85) while
Emma Hunter placed third at 346.55. The trio returned in the evening for a six-dive 1-meter contest. Stauss placed first at 249.15 followed by Seftenberg (220.95) and Hunter (193.50).
The morning session was kicked off by the 200 medley relay that saw Analise Cheshire, Crane, Hopkins and
Logan Wickman post a winning time of 1:43.39. In the 800 free,
Nikki Barnas,
Rebecca Martin, Lainey Newman, and Ali Barnes bested Denison's A-relay with a winning time of 7:35.39.
The night was closed out by Hopkins, Wright, Culibrk, and Chiappe who posted a time of 3:25.60 to win the 400 free relay.

Denison women's swimming & diving closed out its 2021 season on Sunday with the final session of the three-day meet against Ohio Wesleyan at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
Senior
Maddie Hopkins went out with one more victory in the 50 fly with a time of 24.57 completing an eight-event sweep of first-place finishes. Hopkins won the 50 free (22.66*), 100 fly (53.90*), 100 free (50.08), 50 fly (24.57), while swimming on the winning 200 free, 400 medley, 200 medley, and 400 free relays.
Catherine Crane logged a first-place finish in the 100 IM with a time of 57.82 while
Tara Witkowski won the 1,000 free in 10:18.38. Oliva Lantry (29.93) edged
Logan Wickman (30.89) at the wall in the 50 breast and
Lily Kernaghan touched first in the 50 backstroke (26.85).
On the 3-meter board,
Maggie Seftenberg totaled a six-dive score of 265.90.
Mattie Stauss (249.40) and
Emma Hunter (194.00) followed.
The highlight of time trials came from
Esme Wright who posted a time of 1:05.41 in the 100 breast. That would have landed her in third place had she swam the event on Saturday morning.
