Big Red falls to OWU in Opener

Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio—Mikaila Carpenter scored a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Ohio Wesleyan left Livingston Gymnasium with a 65-62 win over the Big Red.

The Battling Bishops took a 63-58 lead with 2:28 remaining after a clutch 3-pointer by freshman Lauren Denison.  The Big Red responded as Carpenter scored down low off a pass from Ann Rafeedie.  Denison trailed by three with 1:11 to play when Hailey MacGregor was fouled by Natalie Hutras in the paint.  MacGregor split the pair to put OWU on top by four.

DU went back to Carpenter in the paint and the sophomore delivered with a quick basket to make it a three-point game with 59 seconds remaining.  At the other end, OWU ran the clock down until Kasey Schipfer was fouled with 25 seconds left.  She also split the pair to keep it a one possession game.

Denison had a chance to tie the game but Gabby Elliott's 3-pointer with 15 seconds left was off the mark. Ohio Wesleyan secured the rebound but quickly turned it over with an offensive foul giving Denison one last chance.  The Battling Bishops wisely fouled Denison's Zyah Beal with five seconds left, preventing DU from getting a potential game-tying 3-pointer off.  Beal missed the first and intentionally missed the second free throw.  Her plan nearly worked out as Rafeedie commandeered the rebound and quickly passed to Beal who fired off a last-second 3-pointer that was blocked by OWU's Grace Stoller.

Schipfer led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes for the Battling Bishops.  Lauren Denison finished with 16 and Molly Delaney totaled 14 points.

Denison also had three players in double figures. Following Carpenter's 16 points was Hutras with 13 and Camm Mack with 11.

Denison shot 36 percent from the field while OWU connected on 43 percent of its action shots.  The Battling Bishops did the most damage from beyond the arc, going 8-for-18 in the game.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Branch Rickey Arena on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University. That game is also closed to spectators. It will be streamed live by Ohio Wesleyan beginning at 2 p.m.
