GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison men's track & field tallied eight event victories on Saturday as the Big Red earned their first victory of the indoor season, taking down Ohio Wesleyan 75-66 at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.
Following another solid performance for the Big Red on the track, Denison captured five of their eight wins in the running events, including a new school record in the 60-meter hurdles. A week after
Charlie Webb took second overall in the event, the sophomore led the way for DU in the prelims where he posted the top-time of 8.60. In the finals, Webb paced the way for the Big Red after clocking in at a new school record time of 8.53 to finish in first. Freshman
Isaiah Kessler followed in second at 9.18, and
Jacob Brown took third at 9.56 after setting the sixth-best PR in program history in the prelims at 9.21. Webb was also a member of the winning 4X400-meter relay team with Brown,
Millan Henegar, and
Lance Tobasky that led the field in 3:32.73, while also finishing fourth in the 60-meter finals (7.51).
In the distance events, the Big Red went 1
st through 6
th in the one-mile run where freshman
Will Cunningham led the way with a final time of 4:34.37.
Worth Hinshaw followed in second at 4:40.24 and
Clay Ryan finished in third at 4:44.50. In the 800-meter run,
Zackary Johnston crossed the finish line in 2:04.76 to place first overall while Hinshaw trailed in third with a time of 2:05.23. Cunningham followed in fourth (2:07.13) and
Matt Bonner closed out the top-five in fifth (2:08.28). Denison also took first in the 3,000-meter run after
Adam Cromwell checked in at 9:03.26 to win the event and
David Judd took second in 9:17.96.
In the field events, sophomore
Angelo Ricci highlighted DU's effort in the long jump and triple jump with a pair of event victories. In the long jump, Ricci placed first overall on a maximum leap of 20'8.50" (6.31 meters) while
Noor Ashrifeh took third overall at 19'2.50" (5.85 meters) and
Wayne Chen landed in sixth (18'3"). In the triple jump, Ricci paced the field once again with a first-place jump of 40'1.25" (12.22 meters) while
Justin Wolfe landed in fourth (35'7.75").
Brown also joined the championship party with an event victory in the high jump after checking in at 5'5" (1.65 meters). In the pole vault, Kessler earned a second-place finish after securing the seventh-best personal record in school history with a leap of 13'9.25" (4.20 meters).
Grant Plasch followed in fifth place at 10'4" (3.15 meters).
Austin Burgess and
Gabe Springer led the way for Denison in the throws events, especially in the shot put where Burgess placed second overall on a toss of 37'9.25" (11.51 meters) and Springer trailed in third (35'5.25"). In the weight throw, Springer took sixth place on a final mark of 37'5" (11.40 meters) while Burgess followed in seventh (36'8.50") and
Porter Fitzgerald landed in eighth place (32'5").
The Big Red will close out the indoor season next Saturday, March 6 when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a dual meet with Wittenberg. The start time of the meet is still to be determined.
