GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison men's track & field opened their 2021 indoor season on Saturday afternoon and fell short of Wabash College by a final score of 82-68 at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.
Despite the team loss, the Big Red impressed in the field and on the track with a combined six event victories, including three individual titles in the running events. On the track, Denison started off on the right foot in the 60-meter hurdle prelims where
Charlie Webb garnered the top qualifying time at 8.70 and freshman
Isaiah Kessler followed in fourth at 9.16. In the finals, Webb led the team in second place with a final time of 8.64 and Kessler turned in the fourth-best personal record in school history with a fourth-place finish in 8.99. Webb also placed second overall in the 200-meter dash after clocking in at 23.71 and he joined
Jacob Brown,
Lance Tobasky, and
Millan Henegar in the 4X400-meter relay where they placed second on a time of 3:35.36. Kessler also took second overall in the pole vault on a maximum effort of 12' (3.66 meters).
In the 60-meter dash, junior
Seven Lindsey followed his personal-best time in the prelims (7.25) with a first-place finish in the finals on a final time of 7.42.
Noor Ashrifeh trailed in seventh (7.56) and
Shin Yano took eighth (7.63).
In the distance events, junior
Keanan Ginell made his way into Denison's Top-10 personal-best list when he won the one-mile run in 4:23.62, good for the ninth-fastest PR in program history.
David Judd followed in sixth place at 4:35.44 and
Adam Cromwell took seventh place (4:36.37). Ginell also competed in the 800-meter run and took second overall after checking in at 2:01.96.
Matt Bonner placed fourth (2:06.07) and Cromwell followed in fifth (2:06.73). The Big Red also went 1, 2, 3 in the 3,000-meter run led by
Will Cunningham in first place at 9:14.86.
Worth Hinshaw took second place (9:22.72) and Zack Johnston finished in third (9:34.08).
In the field events,
Ian Thompson opened competition for DU with a win in the high jump on a mark of 5'10" (1.78 meters).
Angelo Ricci also earned a win for the Big Red in the long jump where he paced the field at 20'7" (6.27 meters) and Brown followed in second at 19'11" (6.07 meters). Brown also earned his first collegiate win in the triple jump on a maximum leap of 42'2.25" (12.86 meters) while Ricci took third (41'11.25").
In the throwing events,
Gabe Springer and
Austin Burgess led the charge for Denison as Springer placed sixth overall in the weight throw on a toss of 42'7.50" (12.99 meters), good for the fourth-highest PR in school history. Burgess followed in ninth with his own personal-best throw of 38'6.75" (11.75 meters), and then placed fourth overall in the shot put on a final distance of 37'6.50" (11.44 meters). Springer took eighth place at 34'9.75" (10.61 meters).
Denison will return to the track next Saturday, Feb. 27 when they host Ohio Wesleyan University at a time to be determined. The meet is closed to spectators. Tune into the live video stream at
