BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Denison men's track & field landed a pair of event winners on Friday as they currently sit in first place at the annual BSC Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern College. Finishing day one with 70 total points, the Big Red are three points ahead of meet host Birmingham Southern with 67 points.
Opening the day with five, top-three finishes in the field events, Denison's first event victory came in the discus throw where senior Austin McManus led all competitors with a maximum throw of 122'4" (37.29 meters). Fellow senior Ivan Maldonado followed in second place at 87'11" (26.81 meters) and Austin Burgess took third overall on a final mark of 86' (26.21 meters).
McManus and Burgess also competed in the shot put event with McManus coming in second place at 37'5" (11.40 meters) and Burgess landing in fifth (34'10.50").
In the triple jump, senior James Dixie logged a final leap of 41'7.25" (12.68 meters) to place third overall. Justin Wolfe followed in fifth place with a mark of 36'7.75" (11.17 meters).
On the track, the Big Red went 1-2-3 in the 1,500-meter run with Clayton Watters leading the pack in first place at 4:22.42. Rhys Fitschen-Brown trailed by less than four seconds in second place at 4:26.37 and Benjamin Rumsfeld took third overall at 4:32.43.
Denison will return for day two of the BSC Invitational on Saturday, March 14 with field and running events set to start at 9 a.m.
