Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio-- No. 7 Denison scored eight-straight goals to open the fourth quarter in what was a 5-5 game entering the period. The Big Red's offensive outburst resulted in a 13-7 win over visiting Roanoke College.
Denison held a 5-2 lead at halftime but the Maroons stormed back in the third, thanks to a pair of goals from Jack Callis and one from Jason Sarro.
The Big Red went to work quickly in the fourth. After Hunter Golian's faceoff win to open the period Tucker Root notched a hat trick with an unassisted goal 40 seconds into the quarter. Ethan Tyack followed with a highlight-reel unassisted goal from one step inside GLE for his first score of the game. DU took possession once again of the faceoff and after a 30-second interference penalty on Roanoke's Ben Warn, Sam Asman found Brant Pittman for the extra-man goal with 12:28 to play. One minute later, DU struck again when Chris Broderick caused a turnover and got the ball to Wills Hutras who scored in transition to give Denison a 9-5 lead.
The wave of Denison offense wasn't done yet. Golian turned in his best performance of the season at the faceoff dot, going 19-of-22 with 10 ground balls. Another faceoff win kept the offense rolling as Root notched his fourth goal with 10:57 to play. In just over four minutes of action, DU had put five goals on the board to double-up the Maroons.
Denison's fourth quarter scoring was rounded out by Doug Godine who scored on an unassisted goal with 8:20 left and via an EMO with 4:39 to play. Tyack also scored his second goal of the afternoon with 8:07 remaining on a feed from Hutras.
DU outshot Roanoke 51-35 while winning 19-of-24 faceoffs. The Big Red also held a 38-27 advantage in ground balls and were 2-for-2 in extra-man situations. Root led all scorers with four goals while Godine finished with three. Tyack tallied a pair of goals on six shots and added two caused turnovers.
On defense, Broderick finished with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Joe Rochte also added two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Reeves McKenney notched 13 saves while facing 20 shots on goal from the Maroons. Roanoke goalie Matt Fererau posted 14 saves in three quarters of action. Cole Hiller played the second quarter and ended with one save while seeing four shots.
Callis paced Roanoke with three goals while Sarro added one goal and two assists. The Big Red opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday (March 7) when they host DePauw University at 2 p.m.
Notable: On Saturday, Denison's men's lacrosse team and members of the coaching staff shaved their heads in support of the Lacrosse for Life initiative. For every shaved head, $1,000 was donated to Boston Children's Hospital to fund research in the fight against pediatric cancer. Denison entered Sunday's game against Roanoke with a check for $50,000 made out to Boston Children's Hospital.
