Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.-- Camden Bowdy's goal with 1:53 left in double overtime sent No. 7 Denison to a dramatic 10-9 victory over No. 13 St. John Fisher.
Midway through the second quarter, the Big Red found themselves trailing 7-2 to the Cardinals but Denison managed to score two of the last three goals in the quarter to make it a four-goal deficit at the half.
In the second half, the Big Red defense clamped down limiting the Cardinals to five shots while gathering nine of the 15 ground balls in the quarter. With the offense enjoying some extended possessions for the first time all afternoon, Tucker Root scored twice and Will Kenney scored once to cut the St. John Fisher lead to 8-7 entering the fourth quarter.
With 10:30 left in the game, Denison's Doug Godine stuffed one in at the doorstep, tying things at 8-8. The home team responded with a goal two minutes later but with 4:44 remaining, after successfully killing a one-minute man-up opportunity for St. John Fisher, first-year Ethan Tyack scored a highlight-reel worthy goal from a step inside goal line extended, knotting the score at 9-9.
The Cardinals had possession with under two minutes left but a pass from the midfield to the X was deflected and Denison's Richie Bartozzi was there for the ground ball. After a Denison timeout, the Big Red went to senior All-American Peter Pittroff but his shot was eight seconds left was saved, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, St. John Fisher won the faceoff and took four consecutive shots before turning it over to Denison's Sam Dyson. Denison called timeout with 1:35 left in the first overtime and it looked as if Tyack was going to take a potential game-winner until the ball was checked out of his crosse by Kyle Rochester. Undeterred, Tyack raced back on defense and forced a turnover of his own with a big stick check to get the ball back for the Big Red. This time, the ball went to senior Brant Pittman who's shot attempt as time expired sailed just wide of the cage.
The opening faceoff of the second overtime once again went in favor of St. John Fisher but a wild pass by Jordan Depetres gave the ball to the Big Red. With 2:06 left in OT2, Pittroff's shot went wide but the Big Red retained possession on the back-up. That set the stage for Bowdy who sent the Big Red home happy with an unassisted goal, capping off the improbable comeback.
Pittman led Denison with three goals while Root and Tyack followed with two goals apiece. The goal was Bowdy's first of the day on just his third shot attempt. The win was even more improbable considering that the Big Red won just 3 of 24 faceoffs and the ground ball stats were 42-26 in favor of St. John Fisher.
Reeves McKenney posted 12 saves in goal for Denison to finish with a .571 save percentage. His counterpart, Darin Eakins, finished with 10 saves and a .500 save percentage.
Chris Broderick led the defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Dyson finished with five ground balls and Joe Rochte had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Cardinals FOGO Joe Post, who was coming off a USILA Division III Team of the Week award, was 21-of-24 with 17 ground balls. He won 71 percent of his faceoff attempts in 2019 while breaking the program's single-season ground ball record. Ian Evans and Tucker O'Donnell led the Cardinals with two goals apiece.
