Big fourth quarter leads Wittenberg past Denison

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg roared back from an 11-point deficit, outscoring Denison 22-8 in the fourth quarter en route to a 58-55 victory over the Big Red.

The Tigers held Denison to one point over the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter and during that time they put together a 15-1 run to take their first lead since early in the second quarter.

Despite Wittenberg's big rally, Denison answered when Zyah Beal's layup with 27 seconds left tied the game at 53-53.  After a timeout by the Tigers, Kristie Kalis drilled a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining to put her team on top, 56-53.

Beal scored again in traffic with four seconds left to make it a one-point game with three seconds to play.  After a Denison foul, Wittenberg's Kalis connected on two free throws with one second left and the Big Red did not have enough time to attempt a potential game-tying shot.

With the loss, Denison and Wittenberg split the regular-season series.  Beal led DU in scoring with 16 points and seven rebounds while going 7-of-13 from the field.  Lily Morris chipped in nine points off the bench as she accounted for three of the team's five 3-point field goals on the day.  Denison shot 31 percent from the field and 21 percent from long range.  DU did outrebound Wittenberg 39-34 and narrowly won the turnover battle, 13-12.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures, led by Korynne Berner's 14 points and Riley Culver's 13 points.  With the loss, Denison drops to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 29) when they host Hiram College at 6 p.m.
