Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – Senior Alison Schafer became the 13th player in Denison women's basketball history to secure 1,000 career points as the Big Red earned a commanding 92-60 victory over Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium.
Helping the Big Red move to 12-5 on the season and 6-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, Schafer finished the game with 16 points, eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone on a jumper with 2:11 remaining in the third quarter. As the 13th member of Denison's 1,000-point club, Schafer is the first player to reach the feat since Jordan Holmes joined the club with 1,456 points from 2013-17.
Leading the Big Red with six points in the first quarter, Schafer kept Denison in front of the Gators at the end of the first after Allegheny shot 9-of-16 (56.3%) from the field an only trailed DU 23-20.
Despite Allegheny's hot-shooting through the first 10 minutes, the Big Red hit the accelerator in the second frame when they blew past AC with a 16-0 scoring run to start the quarter and entered halftime by outscoring the Gators 27-6 in the second. Schafer added six more points while Aliyah Hunter chipped in six of her own off the bench to help Denison shoot 73.3 percent from the floor (11-of-15) and enter the break with a 50-26 advantage.
The Big Red remained in control entering the third as threes from Zyah Beal and Lauren Turner helped DU build their lead to 61-33 with 5:26 to play in the period. Senior Lauren Hofer followed with six-straight points before Shonta Lockett buried a layup and Schafer connected on her milestone-securing bucket to give Denison a 73-48 lead at the end of the third.
Denison posted 10 of their 44 bench points in the fourth quarter, led by five points from freshman Mikaila Carpenter, as the Big Red closed out their dominant victory with a 63.6 shooting percentage in the period and earned their 12th win of the season. The loss dropped Allegheny to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC.
Schafer's historic day came on 5-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 at the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her 16 points. Beal led the Big Red with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting with three boards. Hunter followed with 11 points and six assists while Hofer and Lauren Longbrake each finished with 10 points.
Julianna Skowrin led Allegheny with 15 points and seven rebounds. Rylee Donovan chipped in 13 points, six assists, and four rebounds while Zoe Soilis also tallied 13 points on the day.
Winners of five of their last six games, Denison will return to action next Wednesday, January 22 when they host the College of Wooster at Livingston Gymnasium. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
