Second half surge sends Denison to NCAC Championship

Box Score

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison women's lacrosse outscored Kenyon 9-3 in the second half en route to a 16-10 victory over the Ladies at Piper Stadium.  With the win, the Big Red captured the program's record 21st North Coast Athletic Conference championship.

The first half was an even match-up between two of the top three teams in the NCAC all season.  Kenyon checked into the game with a 6-1 conference mark while Denison was 7-0 and playing for its fourth-straight NCAC title.

It was 7-7 heading to the second half and Kenyon took its first lead of the game 20 seconds into the second half on Maggie Grabowski's second goal of the day.

The Big Red responded with two free-position goals from Kiely Noonan and Casey McTague in a span of 12 seconds.  Just over one minute later, Maddy Heher found Noonan for her second goal of the game, giving Denison a 10-8 lead with 26:29 minutes to play.

Kenyon's Avery Morgan scored on an assist from Julia Mahoney 28 seconds later to get back to within one at 10-9.

Denison defender Charlotte Godfrey made her presence felt all day but she helped turn the tide with a free-position goal after a yellow card was issued to Kenyon's Alexis Redford-Maung Maung with 24:02 remaining.  That started a string of four consecutive DU goals that put them on top 14-9 with 12:23 to play after Virginia Hamilton's goal on a nifty feed from Leander Perun.

Kenyon's Grabowski scored with 11 minutes left but Denison controlled possession over the final 10 minutes, putting two more tallies on the scoreboard on goals by Godfrey and Liza Farnham to lock up the win.

Godfrey finished with two goals, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.  First-year midfielder Casey McTague scored one goal and led with seven draw controls in addition to two caused turnovers.

Noonan led the offense with three goals on three shots.  Colleen Muldoon scored two goals and had two assists.  Heher totaled two goals and one helper rounding out Denison's mult-goal scorers.

Hannah Magarian posted seven saves in the cage for Denison.  Her counterpart, Carina Barnes, finished with 11 saves for Kenyon.

Denison outshot Kenyon 37-23 and the Big Red held a 21-14 advantage in ground balls.

With the win, Denison will be the No. 1 seed in next week's NCAC Tournament.  The semifinals will be played on Thursday in Granville against No. 4 seeded Oberlin at a time to be determined.

Denison's 37-game regular season NCAC winning streak will continue to the 2020 season.  The Big Red's last loss in conference play occurred in 2015.
