Denison grinds out win over Hiram

Box Score

HIRAM, Ohio-  Denison outscored Hiram 23-13 in the fourth quarter to escape Price Gymnasium with a 75-72 victory over the Terriers.  With the win, Denison improves to 7-1 while Hiram drops to 2-6.

The Big Red trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter and began its comeback at the defensive end after moving to a 2-3 zone.  Trailing by six after a layup by Hiram's Madison Branch, Denison got a shot of offensive adrenaline from senior Lauren Turner.  Over the next 89 seconds, Turner scored eight-straight points to give Denison a 68-66 lead with 3:30 to play.  This was Denison's first lead since the first half and Turner made things happen quickly, staring with a 3-pointer followed by a three-point play, the old-fashioned way.

Hiram tied the game on Amanda Holzman's layup with 2:39 left.  On their next possession, the Terriers clamped down on defense but that didn't stop Shonta Lockett from scoring on a runner as the shot clock expired to put DU back on top, 70-68 with 2:06 left.

Alison Schafer and Lauren Hofer had been carrying the Denison offense for most of the night and the pair checked back into the game after a short breather with 1:34 left.  Schafer took a quick foul line jumper that was off the mark but Lockett was there with the offensive board and fed Shafer who drilled the triple to go on top, 73-70.

After two made free throws for Hiram, Denison answered when Schafer recognized the double team she passed to Hofer at the top of the key who fired a pass to Lockett down low for the lay-in and a 75-72 lead.

After two missed 3-pointers by Hiram resulted in a rebound by Denison's Aliyah Hunter with nine seconds left things looked to be sewed up but the Terriers forced a jump ball to take over possession with 3.2 seconds left.  Alainna Conroy's 3-pointer at the buzzer lipped out, giving the win to Denison.

Coming off her career-high 40 point effort against Wittenberg, Schafer led DU with 20 points.  Hofer finished with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Lockett notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Turner scored all eight of her points in a minute and a half. Hunter finished with two points but added nine rebounds and four assists.

Tashauna Wright led Hiram with 20 points and Conroy added 13.

Denison shot 47 percent from the field while Hiram connected on 45 percent of its shot attempts.  The Big Red held a decisive 46-26 lead on the glass.

Denison returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 7 when they travel to Case Western Reserve for a 2 p.m. tip against the Spartans.
