Schafer's 27-point outing leads DU past Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio—Denison opened the 2019-20 season with an 84-77 victory over Capital University on Tuesday night at the Capital Center.  Alison Schafer matched her career-high with 27 points and Zyah Beal added 19 to lead the Big Red.

Denison led 37-34 at halftime and pushed its lead to as many as 13 thanks to a 27-point third quarter.  In the third, DU shot 59 percent from the field and connected on three of their game-high 11 3-pointers in the quarter. 

Schafer was outstanding on both ends of the floor, shooting 8-of-16 and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.  She had two assists and added three steals.  Beal followed by going 5-for-12 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free throw line. 

Lily Morris came off the bench to score 13 points in 22 minutes.  All four of her field goals came from 3-point range.  Lauren Hofer scored 12 points and matched Shonta Lockett for the team lead in rebounds with six.  Kat Williams rounded out the scoring leaders with seven points in 21 minutes.

Capital (0-1) was led in scoring by Elli Wachtman who scored 20 points off the bench.

Denison  (1-0) returns to action on Friday when they take on Anderson University at the Damon's/Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic hosted by Wilmington College at 8 p.m.
