Big Red field hockey earns 2-1 win at DePauw

Box Score

GREENCASTLE, Ind.--  Denison's Maya Tumiwa broke a 1-1 tie six minutes into the second half and that was enough to lead the Big Red to a 2-1 victory over DePauw University from a rain-soaked Reavis Stadium.

Denison took a 1-0 lead just 3:55 into the match when Tumiwa was fouled in the circle and awarded a penalty stroke.  Tumiwa converted the penalty stroke for her fifth goal of the season and second via a penalty stroke.

Two minutes later, the Tigers tied the game at 1-1 when Kate Milner scored her North Coast Athletic Conference-leading 14th goal of the season.

In the final seconds of the second quarter, Denison survived a scare when AC Veith was there for a critical defensive save on a shot by DePauw's Gretchen Bechthold off a short corner insertion by Milner.

After Denison's goal six minutes into the third quarter the Big Red outshot the Tigers 7-1 down the stretch.  DePauw's only shot by Milner with six minutes left in the match went wide of the cage.

Tumiwa led DU with six shots and six shots-on-goal.  Charlotte Godfrey followed with four shots and three shots-on-goal.  DePauw goalie Allie Duranceau posted eight saves while playing all 60 minutes.  Denison goalkeeper Teya Adams recorded two saves while facing three shots-on-goal.

Denison outshot DePauw 15-6 while the Tigers held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corner attempts.  With the win, Denison improves to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC.  DePauw drops to 9-8 and 4-3 in conference play.

The Big Red will host Wittenberg on Tuesday (Oct. 29) at 4:30 p.m. before wrapping up their regular season next Saturday (Nov. 2) at Oberlin.
