Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison field hockey ran its winning streak to five after a 2-0 victory over Rhodes College on Saturday morning at Piper Stadium. With the win, Denison improves to 7-3 on the season.
The two teams played nearly the entire first half to a stalemate but the Big Red got the last word in the closing seconds. Tori Rapillo started things off with a shot with four seconds remaining. It was blocked by a Rhodes defender but Lauren Lazo was there to secure the loose ball. Lazo made a pass in the direction of Kirsten Audette who slapped the shot in the back of the cage as time expired.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Denison struck again. After a penalty corner was pushed into play by Jen Durbin, Emily Marlatt made a pass to Ali Gakenheimer who deflected the ball into the goal, giving Denison a 2-0 lead.
Over the final 20 minutes, Rhodes did attempt three penalty corners but were unable to muster a shot, allowing Denison to complete the shutout win.
The Big Red held an 11-4 advantage in shots while out-cornering Rhodes 8-4. Denison goalie, Kerry Lawler posted two saves in goal. Charlotte Happel and Charlotte Godfrey led DU in shots with two apiece.
During Denison's five-game winning streak, the Big Red has outscored the opposition 12-2 while recording four shutouts. The Big Red returns to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 4:30 p.m. contest against the Kenyon Ladies.
