Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio-- The Denison defense did not allow a shot and Ali Gakenheimer scored twice, helping the Big Red to a 2-0 win over Washington and Lee on Sunday morning at Piper Stadium.
Denison controlled the pace of play from start to finish, rarely even letting the ball cross into W&L's circle. The Big Red offense took the pressure off early when Charlotte Godfrey crossed a pass to Gakenheimer who beat General goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar for the score.
In the second half, DU started to pile up the penalty corners once again. In the 54th minute, Jen Durbin inserted the corner to Abby Scully who created some space by dribbling into the circle. After getting free, she fired a pass to the corner of the cage where Gakenheimer was waiting for the re-direct.
Over the final 25 minutes, Denison attempted three more shots, with two resulting in saves by Yavalar.
The Big Red held a 14-0 advantage in shots and penalty corners. Yavalar finished with seven saves in the cage for Washington and Lee.
With the win, Denison improves to 2-2 while W&L drops to 1-3. The Big Red returns to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to the College of Wooster for a 4:30 p.m. start.
