Denison tops Kenyon for 19th NCAC crown

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison captured their record 19th North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on Wednesday after a 17-5 victory over Kenyon College.  The Big Red completed conference slate with a perfect 8-0 record.  They will be the No. 1 seed in next week's NCAC Tournament.

Just as they have done throughout the regular season, the Big Red asserted themselves early, scoring the first 12 goals of the game.  Four of the first 12 goals came from Maddy Heher who set a new career-high with four goals on only five shot attempts.

Claire Ludlow tallied six points (3 goals, 3 assists).  She is two points away from passing Denison Hall of Famer Cheryl Connolly for second place in career scoring.  She is also four goals away from passing Connolly for second place in career goals scored.  In 67 career games played, Ludlow has totaled 236 points (168 goals, 68 assists).

First-year sensation Kiely Noonan notched her eighth hat trick of the season, running her season goals total to 40.  Claudia Rafi also posted six points by scoring four goals and adding two assists.

The defense was paced by Jane Goodspeed and Grace Gavula who each had four ground balls.  Reid Hirschey, Emily Sonneborn, Goodspeed and Emily Marlatt all finished with two caused turnovers.

Hannah Magarian got the start and made one save in goal.  Becca Jones turned in three saves in the second half. 

Kenyon was led in scoring by Kat Englert who scored four of the team's five goals.

Denison outshot Kenyon 31-10 and won 14 of 23 draw controls. 

The Big Red will close out the regular season on Saturday (April 29) when they play Stevenson at a neutral site in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.  The NCAC Tournament semifinal will take place at Piper Stadium next Wednesday (May 3) at a time to be determined.
