DU men take third at Hilltop Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Big Red men's track and field team finished third at Birmingham Southern's Hilltop Classic on Saturday after collecting 91 points.

Sophomore Isaac Reed paced Denison on Saturday with a victory in the 110-meter hurdles. Reed turned in a personal-best time of 15.95 which landed him in 10th place on the program's top performers list. DU also had a strong showing in the distance events which included a trio of runners finishing in the top-5 in the 5,000-meter event. Junior Jeremy Bloomfield led that charge with a runner-up finish after crossing the line in 16:441.88. Freshman Rhys Fitschen-Brown followed in third with a time of 17:02.52, while Clayton Watters was fifth at 17:34.12.

Senior Zach Cove and sophomore Niall Clancey finished 3-4 in the 1500. Cove checked in at 4:09.57, while Clancey was right behind in 4:09.85. The sophomore also took fourth in the 800 run with a time of 2:01.57. Junior Zach Munn and freshman Kenny Connelly also scored in the 800 with Munn taking sixth (2:04.69) and Connelly placing eighth (2:05.44).

Another second-place performance came in the triple jump where junior David Carter registered a mark of 44'11.75". Freshman James Dixie placed seventh in the triple jump with a combined leap of 41'7", while also finishing sixth in the javelin with a heave of 135'11". In other field event action, freshman Bryce Stricker scored in a pair of events. Stricker finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 43'2.25", while his mark of 140' in the hammer earned him eighth place.

Freshman Jack Ruddy finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 58.71, while Isaac Andrews turned in a pair of seventh-place performances. Andrews finished the 200 dash in 23.12 and the 400-meter event in 52.04. Andrews and Ruddy bookend the 4x400 relay alongside Michael Bonebrake and Munn. The foursome took second with a final time of 3:31.56. Andrews was also part of the 4x100 relay that finished fourth. Andrews along with Carter, Alex Chin and Jake Coplin finished the event in 44.77.

Dubuque won the team title with 195 points followed by the host Panthers with 164. The Big Red took third followed by Berry (74), Samford (59), Spring Hill (41) and Oglethorpe (18).

Denison returns to action next Saturday at the annual Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
