Big Red and Sea Gulls battle to 2-2 tie

Box Score

Denison sophomore Maggie Armstrong's second-half score eventually resulted in a 2-2 tie between the Big Red and Salisbury on Sunday afternoon in Granville.

Senior forward Jacquie Graham extended her current scoring streak to three games after notching the opening goal in the ninth minute. Following a Sea Gull foul just across the midfield stripe, junior Drew Wentzel sent a free kick that found Graham in the box. The senior took a touch and sent a shot past the charging Salisbury keeper. Graham's fourth goal of the season came at 8:12.

Two minutes and three seconds later, Ruthie Lucas netted the equalizer for the Sea Gulls after chasing down a through ball from Jamie Tacka. Lucas also added the go-ahead goal in the 31st minute of play with a shot that found the upper right corner of the goal. The Big Red has a shot to tie the match at 2-2 when Naomi Barker tried to hit Graham with a cross pass, but an interception by keeper Hope Knussman sent Salisbury into the intermission with a 2-1 edge.

Early in the second period, Denison capitalized on a set piece to square the contest at 2-2. Junior Grace Murray floated her corner kick into the box where Graham rifled a header that deflected off a Salisbury defender. The ball caromed towards the center of the box where a hard-charging Armstrong buried a shot from point blank range.

Armstrong nearly set Murray up for a breakaway with just under seven to play in the first overtime, but Knussman came off her line to kick the ball out of danger. The best scoring chance of extra time came in the 104th minute when Armstrong slipped a shot through traffic that required a diving stop by Knussman. Graham followed that up a couple minutes later with a one-timer that went just right of the goal off a Wentzel free kick from 10 yards out. The DU defense also did their job in overtime, blocking a Jayne Pinsky shot in the 107th minute.

Salisbury held a 29-17 advantage in shots, but the Big Red out cornered the Sea Gulls 11-8, highlighted by eight corner attempts in the second half. Denison keeper Jenny Herold made nine saves, while Knussman finished with six stops for Salisbury.

Graham led DU with eight shots and one goal, while Armstrong also scored on four attempts. Jenna Taylor also recorded eight shots, while Lucas had two goals on six shots.

Denison moves to 2-2-1, while the Sea Gulls are now 1-0-2. The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday when they host Ohio Northern at 4:30 p.m.
