In a rematch from 2014, the sixth-ranked Denison men's lacrosse team will face off against Aurora University in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday, May 14 at 7 p.m.
The Big Red secured their spot in the second round of the tournament with a convincing 19-2 win over Carthage College on Wednesday. The Spartans had a slightly tougher road in their first-round matchup, slipping past Albion, 12-11, in overtime at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium in Albion, Mich.
Carrying an 8-2 lead into the second half, Denison (17-1) scored 11 times in the final two periods while the defense pitched a shutout over the final 30 minutes of play. Senior Blair Farinholt and junior Will Donohue both posted hat tricks, while Liam Rooney finished with two goals and three assists. Senior goalie Chris Thomas stopped nine of the 11 shots on goal he faced en route to earning the win.
Aurora (17-2) never trailed in their game at Albion, but suffered a serious scare when the Brittons rattled off three-straight goals in the fourth quarter to force the game into overtime. With 53 seconds left in OT, Trevor McNamara took advantage of a Cameron Braun holding penalty by scoring a man-up goal to send the Spartans into the second round.
Denison holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series with Aurora, which includes an 11-8 win in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Big Red also defeated the Spartans 19-10 in 2015. The winner of the second round matchup between Denison and Aurora will go on to face the winner of Salisbury-Colorado College in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Tickets will be available at the entrance to Piper Stadium on gameday. Prices are $6 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for children ages 3-12. The Denison Sports Network will provide a live video broadcast of Saturday's second round game. Pregame will begin at 6:50 p.m.
