Box Score Carol Allen scored the game-winning goal 1:20 into overtime as Denison handed Oberlin an 11-10 loss from a blustery Piper Stadium in a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game.
With snow falling sporadically throughout the game and winds gusting up to 20 MPH, both teams persevered through difficult conditions. With Denison leading 10-9 with under five minutes to play in regulation, Oberlin's Marissa Maxfield scored her 12th goals of the season, tying the game at 10-10.
Oberlin would control the ensuing draw and went to work in their offensive third with a patient approach. With just over one minute left, Reid Hirschey knocked the ball loose but Denison failed to clear, giving the ball back to the Yeowomen. With 13 seconds left, Oberlin's Maggie Mullard was given a yellow card, handing the ball back to Denison. The Big Red cleared the ball and Ludlow's pass with three seconds left went off the crosse of a DU player allowing time to run out before possession was regained.
In overtime, Denison's Halle Walsh got the draw control. Just 36 seconds into OT, Oberlin's Natalie Rauchle picked up a yellow card, giving Denison a two-player advantage and an 8-meter attempt.
Hirschey's free position was saved by Oberlin goalie Alexa L'Insalata. She gave the ball to Taylor Swift who attempted a crossing pass in efforts to start a clear. Swift's pass was picked off by Denison's Claire Ludlow who fed Lizzy Pellicane for the one-timer. Pellicane's shot was saved by L'Insalata but the loose ball would be scooped up by Allen who was able to deposit the game-winner.
There were seven lead changes as the Big Red came back from a 9-7 deficit with 19 minutes to play in the second half. Four of the game's final five goals would come from Denison players as Allen and Leah Israel scored all four.
Ludlow led DU with four goals, two assists and six draw controls. She also added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Israel scored three goals on six shots and Allen finished with two goals, one assist, three draw controls and two ground balls.
Becca Jones played the first 30 minutes in goal and finished with six saves. Hannah Magarian played the second half and 1:20 of overtime, tallying two saves. Their counterpart, L'Insalata was outstanding, posting 16 saves, 10 of which came in the first half.
Oberlin was led in scoring by Grace Barlow who scored two goals and had one assist.
Denison outshot Oberlin 31-27 and won 16 of 23 draw controls. DU was 6-for-13 on free-position attempts while Oberlin was 3-for-12.
With the win, Denison improves to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in NCAC play. Oberlin falls to 7-4 and 2-1 in conference play. The Big Red will return to action on Wednesday when they host The College of Wooster at 6 p.m. from Piper Stadium.
