Raiders rally for win over DU

Box Score

Mount Union scored three goals over the final 5:26 to hand Denison a 13-12 loss from Piper Stadium in Granville.

There were seven lead changes in the contest and eight tie-game situations.  Halle Walsh's back-to-back goals with 10:11 and 9:30 remaining gave the Big Red its largest lead of the game (12-10).

Rain fell through most of the game, but with six minutes left in the second half, the skies opened up.  After Walsh's 8-meter shot was turned away by Purple Raider goalie Nikki Bonaduce, The Raiders cleared the ball and Katherine Doraty scored her fourth goal of the game.   Mount Union would tie the game 30 seconds later when Taylor Pensyl scored an unassisted goal with 4:52 to play.

Denison's Claire Ludlow was fantastic throughout, scoring a team-high five goals while controlling eight draws.  She won the ensuing draw after Pensyl's game-tying goal but Pensyl would pick off Ludlow's outlet pass, giving the ball back to the Purple Raiders.  After a clear, MTU would go to Pensyl for the eventual game-winning goal.

After Kolbie Haines secured the draw, Mount Union would call a timeout with 2:32 remaining to set up the offense.  Over the final 2:32, the Raiders played keep-away from Denison to run out the clock.

Current North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Lizzy Pellicane, scored two goals and had one assist.  Claudia Rafi and Walsh both scored twice and Carol Allen scored one goal.

Both teams committed 22 turnovers and Mount Union held a 29-22 advantage in shots.  Becca Jones and Hannah Magarian each had four saves while splitting the action in goal.  Bonaduce recorded nine saves for Mount.

Doraty and Pensyl led the visitors with four goals apiece.  Haines scored two while added three ground balls and four draw controls.

Denison drops to 4-5 while Mount Union improves to 7-3. The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Oberlin College at 1 p.m.
