Denison routs Bishops, 18-2

Box Score

Eight minutes into the contest Denison held an 8-0 lead over Ohio Wesleyan and the Big Red never looked back as they rolled to an 18-2 victory.  The win, combined with Allegheny's 16-14 loss to Kenyon assured Denison at least a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship.

Possession was controlled by Denison throughout the contest and in the opening minutes, the Big Red was not bashful on the offensive end.  Carol Allen scored the first two goals of the game in the opening 75 seconds.  Before two minutes elapsed, DU was leading 4-0 after goals from Claudia Rafi and Reid Hirschey.

With 21 minutes left in the first half, Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard when Taylor Weis scored via an 8-meter attempt.  That sparked another six goals over a span of 11 minutes for Denison which propelled them into the halftime intermission with a commanding 14-1 lead.

In the second half, the Big Red took its foot off the gas pedal, outscoring the Battling Bishops 4-1 over the final 30 minutes of play.  Allen finished with four goals and one assist. That runs her career goal total to 139 ranking her fourth in program history.  She needs eight goals to move past Maria Phoenix '96 and into third place. Today's game also moved her over 200 career point milestone.

Hirschey also scored four goals and finished with two assists and three draw controls.  Rafi posted two goals and one assist while Claire Ludlow and Leah Isreal each scored twice.

Halle Walsh led Denison in ground balls with four.  Grace Gavula followed with three.

The Big Red controlled 19 of 21 draws led by Jane Goodspeed who finished with seven draw controls.  Isreal added four.

Winners of five straight, Denison improves to 9-5 and 6-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Ohio Wesleyan drops to 6-9 and 1-6 in league play.  Denison has two games remaining on its schedule next week.  They will travel to DePauw on Wednesday, April 27 before closing out the regular season at home on Saturday, April 30 against Allegheny.  A win on Wednesday would secure the program's 18th NCAC championship.
