Denison pulls away from Scots

Box Score

Despite having two starters out of the lineup, Denison turned in one of its most impressive outings of the season in a 14-7 victory over The College of Wooster.  The win keeps Denison alone in first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings at 3-0.

Denison started the game with leading scorer and regular draw-taker, Claire Ludlow, on the bench with an injury.  Sophomore starter Claudia Rafi was also missing her second-straight game.  The remaining Big Red seemed to relish the opportunity as they utilized an 8-0 run over a span of 20 minutes to pull away from the Fighting Scots.

Seniors Carol Allen and Lizzy Pellicane picked up the slack on offense, as they had a hand in eight of Denison's 14 goals.  Allen led the team with a season-high five goals and one assist while Pellicane posted a season-high seven points (3 goals, 4 assists).

The defense directly caused 11 of Wooster's 32 turnovers as Emily Marlatt led the way with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.  Halle Walsh scored one goal, added one assist while posting two caused turnovers and two ground balls.  Rookie defender Emily Sonneborn also posted two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Wooster was just 15-of-22 in clearing situations while Denison cleared at an 86 percent clip (19-of-22).  Denison also held a 15-9 advantage in draws, controlling 12-straight draws at one point.

Denison goalie Becca Jones got the start and made two saves while playing the first half.  Hannah Magarian played the final 30 minutes and finished with five saves.  Their counterpart, Isabel Perman, posted 10 saves while playing all 60 minutes.

The Big Red has won two-straight and four out of its last five contests.  They improve to 6-5 on the year while Wooster drops to 8-4.  On Saturday, April 16, DU will travel to Hiram for a 1 p.m. conference matchup.
