No. 17 Denison holds off Sewanee

Box Score

No. 17 Denison got three goals apiece from James Meager and Owen Armstrong. That was enough to hold off Sewanee for a 9-4 victory on Saturday at Piper Stadium in Granville.

The Big Red knew they were in for a fight from the opening faceoff.  Winners of the Southern Athletic Association in 2015, Sewanee made its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.  Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind a goal from Jamie McCahan and two from Armstrong, the Tigers roared back with two scores in the final minute of the first quarter.

In the second, Meager put his squad up 4-2 with an unassisted goal two minutes into the period.  Blair Farinholt followed with a goal and Denison looked to be back in control at 5-2.  Sewanee's good day at the faceoff X kept possession even throughout and with 8:16 left in the second, Baylor Koch scored to cut DU's lead back to two.

After a failed extra-man situation by the Big Red with five minutes remaining in the second quarter, the two teams traded off turnovers with the ball ending up in the hands of the Big Red.  After a shot by Armstrong sailed wide, Will Donohue fond Meager, sending Denison into the half leading 6-3.

The two teams played the third quarter scoreless as Denison goalie Chris Thomas and Sewanee netminder Selby Austin combined for seven saves.  Both goalies turned in superb efforts as Austin finished with 13 saves and Thomas posted 12.

With 9:40 to play in the game DU broke the 21 minute scoreless drought as Donahue found Meager for the second time.  Denison's scoring would be closed out by Josh Happ and Armstrong from Teddy Sawyer.

The Big Red edged the Tigers in the shot department, 36-34 and won the ground ball battle 26-25.  There were eight extra-man situations and neither team produced a goal while in man-up.

In addition to Armstrong and Meager's hat tricks, Donohue finished with four assists.

Denison improves to 3-1 and will return to action next Saturday when they face Montclair State in Baltimore Md. at Copper Mine Field.
