Big Red surges past #9 Nazareth

Box Score

Four-straight goals in an eight-minute span helped send 13th-ranked Denison to a 16-12 victory over ninth-ranked Nazareth on the final day of the Greene Turtle Classic held at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md.

Saturday's win marked the Big Red's second-straight victory over a nationally-ranked team, while Denison's only loss came at nationally-ranked Roanoke.

Holding on to a two-goal lead with less than a minute to play in the third quarter, senior Blair Farinholt netted his fourth goal of the game with 44 seconds on the clock to send DU into the final period with a 13-10 advantage.

Just 58 seconds into the final stanza, junior Will Donohue scored off a feed from senior James Meager to extend the Big Red lead to four. Alex Paulus and Farinholt capped off the four-goal run with unassisted tallies one minute and 43 seconds apart. The Golden Flyers scored two quick goals to cut the deficit to 16-12, but the stout Denison defense limited Nazareth to just two shots and forced three turnovers over the final 6:51 to lock up the win.

Farinholt finished with five goals and an assist, while Meager found the back of the net four times and dished out one helper. Liam Rooney scored once and assisted on three goals, while Josh Happ added two goals. Happ, Teddy Sawyer and John Reinhardt had five ground balls each, while Reinhardt and Sawyer combined for five caused turnovers. Senior Eric Baumgardner won 15-of-30 faces offs, while senior goalie Chris Thomas made six saves en route to his sixth win of the season.

Matt O'Neill led Nazareth in scoring with five goals, while Joe Eiskant had three assists. Scott Brown made nine stops in the loss.

Denison improves to 6-1 on the year, while Nazareth falls to 4-2. The Big Red will open North Coast Athletic Conference play next Saturday (March 26) when they host DePauw University at 2 p.m. in Granville.
