The 15th-ranked Chicago Maroons went 5-1 in singles play en route to a 6-3 victory over 25th-ranked Denison on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Big Red grabbed the early advantage by winning two of the three singles flights. The No. 1 doubles team of senior Meg Chiumento and freshman Lauren Hawley collected their second win as a tandem with an 8-3 victory over Rachel Kim and Lucy Tang. Sophomore Courtney Brown and freshman Emma Alsup also improved to 2-1 at a team following a dominating 8-1 second doubles victory over Ariana Iranpour and Kaela Bynoe.
Despite trailing at the start of singles competition, the Maroons were able to win five of the six flights en route to securing the win. DU's lone singles win came at the top flight where Hawley knocked off Iranpour, the nation's fourth-ranked singles player, via 6-3 and 7-6 (11-9) scores. The victory marks the freshman's second over a nationally ranked opponent.
Denison falls to 3-2 on the year, while Chicago improves to 3-2. The Big Red returns to action next Saturday (March 5) when they host Kalamazoo for a 10 a.m. match.
