DU ready for rematch with Witt in NCAC title game

A week and a half ago, Wittenberg came into Granville and handed Denison their first North Coast Athletic Conference loss of the season. On Saturday night, the Big Red will have a chance to return the favor as the two squads will battle for the 2016 NCAC Tournament Championship this Saturday at Edwards-Maurer Field in Springfield, Ohio.

Second-seeded Denison is making their ninth appearance in the tournament final, with their last trip coming last season. The Big Red earned a spot in the title match with a 1-0 victory over DePauw on Wednesday night in Granville. Junior Drew Wentzel scored the lone goal on a penalty kick in the 85th minute of play. A two-time tournament champion, Denison's last postseason title came in 2010 after defeating Allegheny, 1-0, at Barclay-Thomsen Field. Saturday's match will be a rematch of the 2006 and 2007 NCAC Tournament Championships, both won by Wittenberg in Springfield.

Saturday will mark the 39th meeting between Denison and Wittenberg, with the Big Red leading the all-time series 21-10-7. In their regular season match on Oct. 26, DU rallied from a 2-0 first-half deficit to tie the match at 2-2. Junior captain Meg Wozniak notched an unassisted tally in the 60th minute, while senior Naomi Barker scored in the 78th minute to tie the match up. The Tigers scored with 65 seconds left in regulation to earn the one-goal win.

Senior Jacquie Graham currently leads the Big Red with 21 points and nine goals, while her three assists also co-leads the squad. Junior Grace Murray has scored five times and accumulated 13 points this season, while senior Anne Denz and sophomore Maggie Armstrong have nine points each (3 goals, 3 assists).

Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. A live video stream will be provided by Wittenberg in addition to live stats. The winner of the championship match will earn the NCAC's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
