Pearsall's goal powers DU past Kenyon

Box Score

GRANVILLE--  Lucy Pearsall's goal with 15 seconds remaining in the second half sent Denison to a 2-1 victory over Kenyon College from Piper Stadium.  The victory clinches the No. 2 seed for the Big Red in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

After both teams played a scoreless first half, Denison broke through 1:41 into the second half as Jen Durbin scored via a pass from Charlotte Happel off a penalty corner attempt.  The Big Red took advantage of a short-handed defense on the corner attempt as Kenyon's Hannah Paterakis was sidelined one minute earlier on a green card infraction.

Minutes later, Kenyon went on the offensive with four consecutive shot attempts that were turned away by Big Red goalie Ellen Westfall

With just over five minutes left in the contest, Denison's Melissa Hoey was issued her second yellow card of the match.  That forced the Big Red to go short-handed the rest of the way.

The Ladies capitalized as Shannon Hart's shot from just inside the circle was saved by Westfall.  The ball went off the pad of Westfall and angled to the left side where Lynne Cullen was there to stuff the rebound, tying the match at 1-1 with five minutes to play.

Denison managed to flip the field and advance into Kenyon territory after Westfall's seventh save of the match.  The Big Red was awarded a penalty corner that was inserted by Durbin with 18 seconds left on the clock.  It was received by Happel who passed to Pearsall.  She made a move to create some space before uncorking a slapshot from 12 yards for the game-winner.

With only 15 seconds left, Kenyon was unable to generate a shot before time expired.

Kenyon (12-6, 10-4 NCAC) outshot Denison 9-7 and the two teams tied with seven penalty corner attempts, each.  Westfall turned in seven saves while Kenyon's Sarah Speroff finished with two saves.  Hart also added a defensive save for the Ladies in the first half.

The win by Denison (14-4, 11-3 NCAC) sets the stage for a rematch between the Big Red and Kenyon in the semifinals of the NCAC Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 2.  That will be played at Piper Stadium in Granville.  The start time is still TBD.
