No. 24 Denison improves to 7-0

Box Score

GRANVILLE--  Tommy Iammarino passed for 277 yards and accounted for four touchdowns as No. 24 Denison improved to 7-0 following a 42-28 victory over Allegheny College from Piper Stadium.

Iammarino was inserted into the starting lineup after Canaan Gebele was ruled inactive due to an injury sustained in last week's victory over Wittenberg.  The senior stepped into the role and led Denison to a pair of scoring drives in the first quarter, giving the Big Red a 14-0 lead.

Leading 14-7 midway through the second quarter, Iammarino called his own number on second down from the Gator 5-yard line.  The touchdown run by the Chagrin Falls product put the Big Red on top, 21-7.  Later in the quarter, he orchestrated a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Cody Farley.

Denison appeared to have things in check as the third quarter opened.  On the fifth play of their opening drive of the second half, Allegheny's Marcus Davenport stripped Denison tailback Dara Laja of the ball and Freddy Ruiz was there with the scoop-and-score from 27 yards.

Later in the quarter, Denison pushed their lead back to 21 after Iammarino threaded a pass down the middle of the field to his brother, Matt Iammarino, for a 13-yard TD pass.  That marked the first touchdown pass between the two brothers in their Denison careers.

Iammarino's third and final touchdown pass of the game came in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard screen pass to David Carter.  That gave Denison a 42-21 lead with 5:52 to play.  Allegheny tacked on one last touchdown with 3:30 to play, setting the final at 42-28.

Iammarino was 24-of-30 for 277 yards and three touchdown passes.  He also had one rushing TD.  Farley caught six passes out of the backfield for 81 yards and a TD.  He also ran the ball 18 times for 31 yards and two touchdowns.  Laja led the team in rushing with 59 yards on 11 carries.

Allegheny quarterback Logan Lee was 17-of-31 for 194 yards and two touchdowns.  John McFarland was his favorite target.  He finished with seven catches for 115 yards and a score.

The Denison defense sacked Lee six times as senior defensive end Zach Neufeld paced the Big Red with eight tackles, two sacks, three tackles-for-loss and one pass break-up.  Alex Raynor followed with eight tackles, one sack and two TFL's.  Rookie defensive end, Nate Keirn finished with one sack. His 8.5 sacks is a new single-season high for a Big Red defensive player.

The offense outgained the Gators, 400-260 and controlled time of possession, 36:42-23:18.

The win keeps Denison alone in first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  The Big Red will travel to Greencastle, Indiana next Saturday (Oct. 29) for a 2 p.m. kickoff against DePauw University.
