Pair of second half goals push DU past Witt

Box Score

Second half goals by senior forward Abby Martone and junior Melissa Hoey was enough to push Denison past Wittenberg by a final score of 2-1 in a critical North Coast Athletic Conference matchup from Edwards-Maurer Field.

Wittenberg scored first when Audrey Coler connected with Blaine Donnelly in the 26th minute.

The 1-0 lead lasted until the 54th minute of play.  That's when the Denison co-captains teamed up for the game-tying goal as junior back Jane Higley fed Martone with the equalizer.

Denison nearly took the lead five minutes later when first-year Ali Gakenheimer's shot clanged off the post.

With just over six minutes left in regulation, Hoey scored the eventual game-winner off a pass from Noelle Hubbard.  In the final minute, Wittenberg did have two consecutive penalty corner attempts but the Tigers couldn't manage a shot attempt.

DU held a 13-6 advantage in shots and an 11-6 lead in penalty corner attempts.  Sophomore goalie Ellen Westfall finished with one save for Denison.  Wittenberg keeper Sarah Brownell had five saves for the Tigers.

Denison improves to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the NCAC.  They will host Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. inside Piper Stadium.  With the win, Denison moves into a tie for second place in the conference standings.
