Box Score GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Big Red field hockey team capped off a five-game road swing with a 1-0 victory at Kenyon on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Denison secured a 4-1 record over the stretch of road games.
Denison dominated play in the opening 35 minutes, outshooting the Ladies 7-0. Of those seven attempts, four required a save by Kenyon goalie Sarah Speroff. Despite the heavy offense, the two teams entered the intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
All that changed 62 seconds into the second half when freshman Charlotte Happel scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Over the final 30 minutes, Kenyon turned up the offensive pressure as they took seven of the final eight shots of the game. However, goalie Ellen Westfall turned aside the three shots on cage to preserve her ninth-career shutout.
The Big Red held a 9-7 edge in shots and attempted five of the game's six penalty corners. Denison's Lucy Pearsall and Kenyon's Weezie Foster registered a game-high three shots each, while the Big Red's goal scorer, Happel, had two shots.
Denison improves to 8-3 overall, while the Ladies fall to 6-5 on the season. Both teams are now 5-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The Big Red returns home on Wednesday when they host Wooster at 4:30 p.m.
