Holmes breaks another record as Big Red win eighth straight

Box Score

Jordan Holmes set a new single-game field goal percentage record as Denison defeated Ohio Wesleyan 58-42 from Branch Rickey Arena.

Holmes tallied her sixth consecutive double-double in the win, scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the process. She also blocked seven shots and finished a perfect 10-for-10 from the field, setting a new program single-game record for field goal percentage (minimum 10 field goal attempts). Holmes' perfect 1.000 percentage breaks Carolyn Simpson's 10-of-11 mark against Hanover in 2007.

The post players were pivotal for the Big Red, who got off to a strong start. Emily Krumpe scored six points in the first period, helping Denison get out to a 14-8 lead after 10 minutes.

Foul trouble in the second quarter forced both Holmes and Krumpe to the bench, but quality shooting enabled the Big Red to take a 31-24 lead into the locker room. In the first half, Gabrielle Nottage came off the bench and scored six points.

In the third quarter, Denison committed eight turnovers but the defense never let OWU get closer than four points behind.  At the end of the penultimate period, the Bishops trailed by just five points, 41-36.

Denison put the game out of reach with an 11-2 run over the first 5:04 of the fourth quarter. During the run, a Holmes three-point play gave the Big Red a double-digit lead that was too big to be overcome.

Holmes' 22 points led all players, followed by Krumpe, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Nottage's six paced Denison subs.

For the Bishops, Erin Delaney scored 13 points, followed by Megan Kuether with 11.

The Big Red never trailed as they held OWU to just 25.9% shooting from the field. Denison also held a 44-18 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded Ohio Wesleyan 38-28.

With their eighth straight win, DU improves to 15-3, 8-1 in NCAC play. The Battling Bishops fall to 3-15, 2-7 in conference play. The NCAC-leading Big Red return to action on Wednesday night, when they host second place DePauw. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. from Livingston Gymnasium.
