Box Score Denison opened the 2015 season with a convincing 41-14 victory over Marietta College in front of 2,455 at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium on Saturday night in Granville.
Junior quarterback Tommy Iammarino made his first start under center and was outstanding as he guided Denison to four scoring drives and a 24-7 halftime lead. Iammarino found preseason All-American, Dushawn Brown early and often. Brown scored the first touchdown of the game on a 22-yard strike from Iammarino late in the first quarter.
Marietta would answer when Nick O'Neal plunged in from 1-yard, capping off a seven-play, 41-yard drive.
Denison's next possession would be stalled out on the Marietta 15-yard line when Iammarino's pass on 4th and 8 was incomplete. Marietta took over in the shadows of their own goalposts and O'Neal's first carry resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Denison cornerback, Alex Willingham.
On third down from the Marietta 30-yard line, Iammarino connected with senior tailback Jordan Patterson on a wheel route. Patterson found a seam in the Pioneer defense and streaked 30 yards for the touchdown.
Six minutes later, Iammarino would throw his third touchdown pass of the half on a 22-yard strike to senior tight end Cam Layer.
A Conor Dunn 24-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in the second quarter would send the Big Red into the locker room with a 24-7 lead.
In the second half, freshman quarterback Canaan Gebele got his first opportunity to play at the college level and the rookie turned heads with his escape ability and poise. Gebele finished 8-of-11 for 74 yards and one touchdown pass. He also rushed eight times for 33 yards and a score. For the game, Denison's quarterbacks combined to go 25-of-34 for 390 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. Iammarino would post his first career 300-yard passing game as he finished with 316 yards and three TDs. It also marked the first 300-yard passing game in DU history when a quarterback was making his first career start.
Brown posted his seventh career 100-yard receiving game as he finished with seven grabs for 173 yards and one TD. He needs only 91 yards to become Denison's career leader for receiving yardage. Patterson caught five passes out of the backfield for 83 yards and a touchdown. Layer posted four grabs for 50 yards and a score while the fourth TD pass would find first-year C.J. Davis on a 2-yard scoring strike from Gebele late in the fourth quarter.
