DePauw edges Big Red, 2-1

Box Score

DePauw's Paige Berliner scored twice, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute, as the Tigers slipped by Denison 2-1 on Saturday afternoon from Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

The Big Red found themselves trailing the Tigers 1-0 after Berliner scored to the lower left corner of the cage from close range.  In the first half, DePauw held a 10-2 advantage in the shot department but the second half would be a different story.  The Big Red came out of the break looking like a new team.  They became the aggressor and two minutes into the second half, Britta Marden scored off a pass from Elsie Humes, tying the match at 1-1.

Eight minutes later DU was on the doorstep once again, but a pair of defensive saves by Grace Waldman on shots by Humes and Abby Martone would keep the score tied.

Berliner would strike again for DePauw in the 62nd minute when sent a shot at DU goalie Ellen Westfall who made the initial save.  Berliner would stick with it and control the rebound.  Her follow-up shot would prove to be the game-winner.

In the final minute of play, Denison was awarded a penalty corner and nearly scored.  A cross to Jen Durbin just missed her stick. Durbin was stationed in the corner next to the goal looking for the tip-in.

DePauw improves to 5-2 and 4-0 in the NCAC while Denison drops to 5-3 and 4-1 in conference play.  The Big Red will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 1 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 5 p.m. match with Kenyon.
