Box Score The Big Red field hockey team kept its unblemished North Coast Athletic Conference record intact after a 5-1 victory over Earlham on Friday evening in Granville.
Denison used an offensive flurry late in the opening half to produce the game's first goal. Senior Greta Finney ripped a shot that was stopped by Quaker goalie Kate Korobkina. With the ball still at the goaltender's feet, the DU attack frantically tried to push the ball into the back of the cage. After almost a 10 second battle, Jen Durbin got the final poke that knocked the ball over the goal line at 28:43.
Nearly five minutes later, another senior got into the scoring column when Britta Marden recorded an unassisted tally. Marden worked through the Earlham defense and fired a shot between Korobkina's legs for the score. The senior's fourth goal of the season came at 33:40.
It remained a two-goal game until the 41st minute when Abby Martone and Finney hooked up for a goal. Martone worked down the right side of the field and sent in a cross that was one-timed into the cage by Finney. The senior's first goal this season pushed the Big Red lead to 3-0.
The Quakers broke up the shutout bid when Tori Posey redirected a Megan Hut shot from the point at 53:39. DU capped off the scoring with a pair of goals by sophomore Tori Rapillo just one minute and 40 seconds apart. Rapillo's first tally of the season came when she deflected a Marden shot in the 67th minute of play. The sophomore wasted no time picking up her second goal when she redirected a cross from Marden into the left side of the goal at 68:12.
The Big Red held a commanding 29-5 advantage in shots and took 13 corners to Earlham's two. Finney finished with a game-high seven shots to go along with one goal, while Marden had six attempts and four points (1 goal, 2 assists). Rapillo's two goals came on three shots. Freshman Ellen Westfall made three saves in 60 minutes en route to her fifth win of the year. Fellow rookie keeper Maria Taylor saw her first action of the season, recording a save in the final 10 minutes.
Earlham's leading scorer, Hut, was limited to just two shots and an assist, while Posey scored on her only attempt of the game. Korobkina played all 70 minutes and made 12 stops.
Denison improves to 5-2 on the year and 4-0 in NCAC play, while the Quakers fall to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they host DePauw at 12 p.m.
