Big Red blanks Bishops

Box Score

Denison remained unbeaten in North Coast Athletic Conference play following a 2-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Piper Stadium.

The Big Red took an early lead when Britta Marden scored her third goal of the season after taking a pass from Elsie Humes in the fifth minute of play.

Denison would dominate possession throughout the first half, holding the Battling Bishops without a shot attempt over the first 35 minutes of play.  Eleven minutes into the second half, Denison's Jen Durbin pushed a penalty corner attempt to Lucy Pearsall who crossed a pass to Martone who was stationed in front of the cage.  The pass tipped off Martone's stick and into the goal for DU's second score.

One minute later, Ohio Wesleyan would have its best scoring opportunity when Paige Haenig was awarded a penalty stroke after incurring a foul in the circle.  Haenig's stroke forced Denison goalkeeper Ellen Westfall to fully extend to her left and the rookie made the glove save to preserve the shutout.

In the 65th minute, OWU was back on the attack and Nikki Olguin sent a shot to the left of the Westfall, but Kirsten Audette was there to make a defensive save marking her fourth in the last two contests.

Westfall finished with three saves for Denison while OWU's Jackie Feliciano tallied 12 saves.  As a team, Denison outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 23-7.  Marden led the way with six shots while Durbin finished with five.  The Big Red also attempted 13 penalty corners to OWU's three.

Denison improves to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC while Ohio Wesleyan drops to 3-3 and 1-2 in conference play.  DU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 25, when they host Earlham at 5 p.m.
