Big Red blasts Oberlin 45-0; Brown catches 4 TDs

Box Score

Dushawn Brown caught four touchdowns and became Denison's career leader in receiving yards and TDs, highlighting a 45-0 win over Oberlin College on Saturday night in Granville, Ohio.

After a seven catch, 173 yard performance in the opener against Marietta, Brown entered tonight's game needing only 91 yards to break the record for career receiving yards.  This night was all about efficiency as Denison's two-headed quarterback attack picked apart the Oberlin secondary throughout.

Starting quarterback Tommy Iammarino capped off a 10-play 88-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, giving Denison a 7-0 lead.  A 30-yard field goal by Conor Dunn after a Joel Lohoua interception would give DU a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, a three-and-out followed by a 10-yard punt by Oberlin set up Denison with excellent field position.  On the fourth play of the drive, Iammarino connected with Brown from 12-yards away to put Denison on top, 17-0.

Brown would go on to score the next three touchdowns on passes of 35-yards, 2-yards and 26-yards over the next two quarters of play.  On his final reception, a 26-yard scoring strike from Canaan Gebele, Brown broke the receiving yardage record that had been held by Josh Jirgens since the 2003 season.  In 32 career games, Brown has 149 receptions for 2,469 yards and 25 touchdowns.  Jirgens also held the career record for receiving touchdowns at 23.

For the game, Brown finished with five catches for 111 yards and four scores.  Iammarino was 15-for-18 for 134 yards and two touchdowns.  Gebele was 5-of-8 for 89 yards and two scores.  The final touchdown of the game came from Zach Dobbins to Malik Webster from six yards out on the game's final drive.

While the offense was setting off fireworks the Denison defense was playing hide and seek.  Oberlin ran only 47 offensive plays and gained 86 total yards in the game.  The Yeomen managed five first downs while turning the ball over twice.  The DU offense dominated time of possession, 36:13-23:47 while the defense held Oberlin to a 2-of-12 showing on third down.

Andrew Baird led the Big Red defense with seven tackles and two tackles for a loss.  Lucas Romick, who was named to the Allstate Good Works Team earlier this week and can still be voted for as the Good Works Team Captain, finished with five tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

DU rushed for 151 yards as Cody Farley carried the ball nine times for 52 yards while Jordan Patterson also got nine carries for 51 yards.

Denison improves to 2-0 and will travel to Wooster next Saturday, Sept. 26 for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Fighting Scots.
