Box Score Denison scored five goals in a span of 3:26 early in the second half. That allowed the Big Red to break a 5-5 halftime tie with Kenyon, eventually leading to a 14-9 victory from Piper Stadium.
After a sloppy first half by both squads which saw a combined 26 turnovers and 11 saves from Kenyon goalie Meredith Bentsen, the Big Red got things under control in the second half by protecting the ball and being more strategic in their shot selection.
After 10 minutes elapsed in the second half without a goal, DU broke the seal when Whitney Powel found Carol Allen for her 21st goal of the season. Powel would go on to win the next draw and promptly found Halle Walsh for the 7-5 lead.
Less than two minutes later, after a caused turnover by Isabel Swicklik, Denison's Claire Ludlow cut to the cage and scored her second goal of the game. The draw control would continue to be Denison's best friend during the 5-0 run as Erin Keller won two straight that would lead to goals from Claudia Rafi and the second from Keller, herself.
The final goal from Keller, which also came via a feed from Powel, put the Big Red up 10-5 with 16:19 to play.
Kenyon would go on to score four of the next five goals, cutting Denison's lead to 11-9 with eight minutes to play. Over the final eight minutes, Denison would two of three draws and did not commit a turnover. They also got three goals from Reid Hirschey, Rafi and Ludlow to set the final at 14-9.
Powel finished with a career-high six assists, one shy of the Denison single-game record. She also scored one goal while adding three ground balls and three draw controls.
Rafi paced the team in scoring with four goals while Ludlow added three goals and one assist. Becca Jones made her second career start in goal and posted 11 saves. The Big Red outshot Kenyon 36-25 and controlled 15 of 25 draws.
Kenyon was led by Jane Symmes who scored six of the team's nine goals off 12 shot attempts. Summes also added eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Bentsen contributed 16 saves in her 60 minutes between the pipes.
Denison improves to 6-6 overall while Kenyon drops to 7-4. The Big Red will hit the road on Saturday for a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup with Oberlin at 4 p.m.
