Denison men shut down Quakers

The Denison Big Red picked up their second-consecutive victory on Saturday, defeating Earlham 9-0 at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville, Ohio.

All three DU doubles teams won via 8-2 scores. Sophomore Owen Smith and freshman Grant MacPherson opened the scoring with a victory over Adam Schwartz and Erekle Tsamalashvili at third doubles. Grant Veltman and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean followed with a win over Vitalii Stadnyk and Jack Ventura-Cruess. Seniors Casey Cempre and Jeffrey LoDuca completed the sweep at the second flight with a decision of Gleb Babikov and Vojislav Tatarevic.

Freshman Jack O'Koniewski and Cempre secured the Big Red's victory with victories at fourth and third singles, respectively. O'Koniewski won a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Tatarevic, while Cempre's 6-4, 6-2 win over Ventura-Cruess was the decisive point in the match. O'Gorman-Bean followed with a straight-set decision (6-3, 6-3) over Babikov at No. 2 singles.

In a battle of regionally-ranked opponents, Veltman defeated Stadnyk at the top flight. The DU senior won the opening set via 6-4 score. After trailing in the second set, Veltman took a 6-5 lead. Stadnyk answered by securing the next point, forcing a 12-point tiebreaker. Stadnyk took an early lead in the tiebreaker, but Veltman would battle back to eventually to win the set thanks to an 8-6 victory in the tiebreaker.

Smith completed the shutout win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over TiQi Brown at sixth singles. With the win, Smith's record improved to 7-2 at the flight and 10-5 overall.

Denison moves to 5-7 on the year, while the Quakers fall to 3-7. The Big Red returns to the court on Monday when they travel to Wooster, Ohio for a 4 p.m. match against the Fighting Scots.
