Augustana stuns Big Red

Box Score

Augustana goalie Jenna Hofmann made two saves in the final 20 seconds of play and that was enough to preserve an 11-10 win over the Denison Big Red from Piper Stadium.

It was all Denison early as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first 20 minutes of play.  Five of Denison's first seven goals came from Claire Ludlow (3) and Lizzy Pellicane (2) and with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half DU had built a five-goal lead.

The Vikings would begin their comeback by scoring three-straight goals to close out the first period.  In the second half, Erin Keller's back-to-back goals in the first four minutes of play put her squad back on top, 9-5.

Denison would not score again for the next 22 minutes.  During that span, Augustana went on a 5-0 run.  Hilary Kargl's goal with 5:09 to play gave the Vikings their first lead of the night.  Ludlow would answer with 3:52 to play when she scored off an 8-meter attempt.

Keller would win the ensuing draw control and after two shots from DU missed the mark, Augustana's Kargl scored in traffic to put her team back in the lead, 11-10.

After Kargl's goal, a Denison defender was called for a foul and the draw control was waived off, giving the Vikings the ball back with just over two minutes to play.  DU would force a turnover and for much of the final 90 seconds, DU controlled possession.

With 20 seconds left and again with three seconds remaining, Keller had a free position attempt that each time was turned away by Hofmann.  She finished with 13 saves, 10 of which came in the second half.

Denison got four goals from Ludlow and three goals from Keller.  She also posted three draw controls and three caused turnovers.  Pellicane finished with two goals and one assist while Kelsey Wright rounded out the scoring with one goal.  Melissa Weinsz paced the defense with four ground balls.

Kargl finished with four goals and two assists for Augustana.  Kaylee Nolan led the defense with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.

DU outshot Augustana 35-23.  Both teams committed 23 turnovers and both squads controlled 11 draws.

The Big Red drops to 3-4 while the Vikings improve to 5-1.  Denison will return to action on Saturday when they host Wittenberg at 3 p.m.
