Box Score A seemingly comfortable 10-4 lead after three quarters turned into a white-knuckler in a hurry as the 19th ranked Denison Big Red took on St. Mary's from Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. In the end, DU would hold off the hard-charging Seahawks for the 14-12 win.
Through 45 minutes all was well in Big Red Land. Eric Baumgardner was winning faceoffs at an All-American rate and the offense was taking advantage of St. Mary's turnovers and penalties.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams would combine for 12 goals, eight of which came from the Seahawks. With 7 minutes to play in the game, Denison's six-goal lead had shrunk to two after Eric Simon scored on an assist from Matt Tarrant. With 1:59 to play, Simon would score again, making the score 13-11 in favor of Denison. The Seahawks won the faceoff but promptly turned it over. Denison took over and began the clear but a stiff stick check from a St. Mary's defensman would result in a Big Red turnover during the clear attempt. That sparked a breakaway for Nicholas Wilkinson that he converted to pull his squad to within one with 1:25 remaining.
Baumgardner had an incredible afternoon at the faceoff X, winning 23-of-31 attempts. None of his 23 wins were bigger than the last. Off the whistle, he got the ball to pop into the air. He came out of his stance and scooped up the ground ball and quickly sent it back to goalie Elliott Avis for the clear. Avis found Teddy Sawyer who took off down the near side of the field, eventually going 1v1 with the St. Mary's goalie. Sawyer took the shot and converted the game-clinching goal with 49 seconds remaining. The goal was Sawyer's third of the season off just three shot attempts.
Liam Rooney led Denison with four goals and one assist off seven shot attempts. James Meager added three goals and one assist while Blair Farinholt scored two goals and had two assists. In his first start of the year, attacker Nick Bortolani scored twice. DU's scoring was rounded out by Jamie McCahan, Sawyer and Liam Donovan.
Baumgardner paced Denison with 10 ground balls while Cole Perry ended with eight from his wing position. Elliott Avis got the win in goal as he posted three saves in 52 minutes of action. Joey Casey stopped 13 shots for St. Mary's.
Attacker Eric Simon was the driving force behind the St. Mary's offense as he finished with seven goals off 12 shots.
No. 19 Denison improves to 5-2 while St. Mary's falls to 0-4. The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (March 21) when they take on No. 16 Montclair St. in Malvern, Pa.
