Denison suffers first loss to Camels

Box Score

Denison women's lacrosse opened its spring break slate of games in Clearwater, Fla. with a 15-11 loss to Connecticut College on Sunday.  The Big Red got off to a fast start, leading 4-1 midway through the first half, but a 6-1 run by the Camels to close the first half would give them a 7-5 lead heading to the second half.

The Camels would continue their offensive attack in the early parts of the second period, scoring seven of the first nine goals of the second half.  With just over 12 minutes left in the contest, Connecticut College had built a 14-7 lead, putting the game out of reach.

Denison would score the five of the final six goals of the game to set the final at 15-11.

The Big Red took the early lead behind two free position goals from Claire Ludlow and two scores from Erin Keller.  Despite winning 15 of 28 draw controls, the Big Red were plagued by turnovers that put the ball in the Camels' end of the field for much of the latter stages of the first half.  Conn. College scored six of its 15 goals via 8-meter attempts.  For the game, they held a 28-26 advantage in shots while winning the ground ball game 19-13.

Ludlow paced the DU offense with four goals on seven shots.  Keller followed with three goals and a game-high five draw controls.  The scoring was rounded out by Kelsey Wright (1 goal, 1 assist), Halle Walsh (1 goal, 1 assist), Leah Israel (1 goal) and Claudia Rafi (1 goal).

The Camels were led by Cecily Cushamn's three goals and one assist while Madison Barker also posted a hat trick.

Laura Van Horn of Denison and Meg Raskin of Conn. College each tallied 10 saves apiece while playing all 60 minutes.

Denison drops to 2-1 on the season while Connecticut College improves to 2-3.  DU will try and bounce back on Wednesday when they take on William Smith in Clearwater, Fla.
