Box Score Kellie Arter scored a career-high 25 points and Jordan Holmes just missed a triple-double as Denison held on for a 66-61 win over The College of Wooster from Timken Gymnasium.
The two teams found themselves tied at halftime, 31-31, but a 19-9 run by the Big Red to open the second half would result in Denison's first double-digit lead of the contest with 12:44 to play.
Three minutes later, Arter would knock down her fifth 3-pointer of the game, putting her squad back up 10 with 9:49 to go. DU would maintain that 10-point lead until Wooster's Sydney Grier converted a three-point play after a foul by Gabrielle Nottage.
With 3:30 left and leading by seven, the turnover bug hit the Big Red at the wrong time. Wooster would proceed to turn four consecutive miscues by Denison into three field goals. Suddenly, with 1:22 to play, The Fighting Scots trailed 62-61.
This time the Big Red would look for Arter down low and the junior converted a layup to put her team up three. On the next possession, she would force a steal on Wooster's Lauren Hancher. The Scots would be forced to foul with 22 seconds to play and Nottage went to the line where she drained a pair of pressure-packed free throws.
Leading by five with 13 seconds left, Wooster's Rachel Collins would miss with five seconds on the clock. Mary Margaret Habel was there with the rebound, securing the win for Denison.
DU shot 62 percent in the second half (13-of-21) and were 4-of-6 from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes. For the game, Denison shot 50 percent while Wooster connected on 34 percent of its field goal attempts. The Big Red held a commanding 41-31 advantage on the boards, but the equalizer were the turnovers. Denison committed 21 while Wooster ended with 10. The Scots managed to turn those 21 turnovers into 24 points.
Arter's 25 points came by shooting 9-of-15 from the field and 5-of-8 from 3-point land. She also added five rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes. Holmes played all 40 minutes and flirted with a triple-double by scoring 10 points, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking eight shots.
Habel finished with 12 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes while Nottage ended with 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Wooster was led in scoring by Hancher who finished with 12 points and seven steals. Grier chipped in 10 points while Collins added nine.
The win pulls Denison back to .500 at 11-11 and improves their record to 7-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Big Red will host Kenyon on Wednesday (Feb. 11) at 6 p.m. from Livingston Gymnasium. Kenyon is 4-8 in NCAC play and are coming off a four-point loss to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
