Box Score An 8-0 run to open overtime was enough to send Oberlin to a 62-54 win over the Denison Big Red from Livingston Gym on Wednesday night. The loss drops Denison to 6-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Oberlin improves to 8-4.
In the second half, the Big Red battled back from a 10-point deficit with just over five minutes to play. DU would proceed to go on a 10-0 run over the next two and a half minutes. Six of DU's 10 points would come from 3-point plays by Jordan Holmes.
With 1:15 to play in regulation, Oberlin's Lindsey Bernhardt made a nice backdoor cut and caught a bounce pass from Katie Lucaites to put her squad back on top, 47-45. Each team would come up dry on their next possession but with 20 seconds to play, Denison's Gabrielle Nottage scored via a backdoor layup off a feed from Mary Margaret Habel, tying the game at 47-47.
Oberlin's final shot in regulation would be blocked by Taylor Lindquist and the two teams would go on to overtime.
DU would win the opening tip but a steal by Oberlin's Christina Marquette followed by a quick-trigger 3-pointer would set the tone for the Yeowomen. Seconds later, Oberlin would follow a Denison miss with a triple by Bernhardt to go up six.
A miss by Nottage would be rebounded by Marquette and she converted at the other end to cap off the 8-0 run over the first 1:25 of overtime.
Denison's Kellie Arter and Holmes would give the Big Red some hope with back-to-back baskets cutting the Oberlin lead to 55-51 with 1:51 remaining. However, the overtime period belonged to Marquette as she drilled a 3-pointer with 1:10 to play, making a Denison comeback attempt extremely improbable.
Over the final minute the Yeowomen took care of business at the free throw line to win, 62-54.
Marquette finished with 15 points and nine rebounds in 42 minutes while Bernhardt led the team in scoring with 19 points. First-year Anna Moore added eight rebounds and eight blocked shots in just 25 minutes of action.
Denison got an outstanding performance from Holmes. She played all 45 minutes and ended with 24 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots. Arter and Habel both chipped in seven points for DU.
The Big Red held a 49-47 advantage on the glass. Oberlin shot 35 percent from the field while Denison finished at 34 percent. The 3-pointer helped the Yeowomen as they connected on 9-of-16 from beyond the arc.
Denison will look to bounce back on Saturday (Feb. 7) when they travel to The College of Wooster for a 2 p.m. tip-off against the Fighting Scots.
