Denison to host NCAA Tournament opening rounds

Denison University is back in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament and will host first and second matches at Barclay-Thomsen Field. The Big Red will be making their 15th appearance in the national tournament.

Denison was one of 20 teams that received an at-large bid from the NCAA after posting a 15-4 record. The Big Red will open NCAA postseason play against DeSales (Pa.) University on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m.

Prior to the match between the Big Red and the Bulldogs, fourth-ranked Washington University-St. Louis, champions of the University Athletic Association, will take on York (Pa.) University, winners of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, in the other first round match on Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner of the Denison/DeSales match will face the winner of the Washington-St. Louis/York match on Sunday (Nov. 15) at 1 p.m.

Admission to each day's session will be $6 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children ages 3-12.

The duo of junior Jacquie Graham and freshman Maggie Armstrong lead the Big Red attack this season with 17 points apiece. Graham has a team-best eight goals and one assist, while Armstrong has scored seven times and dished out three helpers in her first collegiate season. Right behind them are junior Anne Denz and sophomore Meg Wozniak. Denz and Wozniak have each recorded six goals, three assists and four game-winning scores.

In addition to the offensive fire power, the Denison defense has played a large part in the team's success this year. Sophomore goalie Jenny Herold and the defensive line comprised of Allison VilsackDrew WentzelJessica Skelly and Logan Berlet have posted nine shutouts and boast a 0.67 goals-against average. The versatile backline has also produced in the offensive third this year, totaling eight goals and four assists.

DeSales (14-5) won its first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship and earned the conference's automatic bid after defeating Wilkes 2-1 last Saturday. Winners of eight of their last nine matches, the Bulldogs are making their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Washington-St. Louis (16-2) secured the UAA's automatic bid after going 6-1 in conference play, which included a victory over Carnegie Mellon on Oct. 30 in St. Louis, Mo. Winners of four straight, the Bears are making their 10th-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and 15th overall appearance.

York (9-10) captured its third CAC Tournament title and received the league's automatic bid after defeating Mary Washington 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday. The Spartans will carry a three-match winning streak into their third NCAA Tournament appearance.
