Defense leads #9 Wabash past Big Red

Box Score

No. 9 Wabash entered the game with the nation's second-ranked scoring defense, allowing just 6.5 points per game.  That defense stayed true to form as the Little Giants handed Denison a 38-7 defeat in Crawfordsville, Ind.  With the win, Wabash remains undefeated at 9-0 while the Big Red drop to 6-3.

The Denison defense answered the call early and did its best to keep the Little Giants at bay.  The home team scored on its first possession of the game via a Connor Rice 11-yard touchdown run, but Wabash came up dry on their next three possessions.

Time of possession in the first half was lopsided as the Big Red managed just 12 offensive plays on their first four possessions of the game.  Wabash scored its second touchdown of the game with 5:39 left in the second quarter when Rice completed a 4-yard pass to Drake Christian.

Denison responded with its best drive to that point as Cody Farley and Canaan Gebele both converted first downs with their feet.  On 1st and 10 from mid field, Gebele was intercepted by Austin Brown at the 29 yardline.  Brown's return set the Little Giants up on their own 40 with 3:30 left in the half.  The Big Red defense would respond with another stop, but DU's drive would be stalled and capped off by a short punt that put the Little Giants in field goal range with under a minute to play in the second quarter.

On third down with four seconds left, Wabash's Andrew Tutsie kicked a 39-yard field goal to give his team a 17-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Big Red had little success flipping field position and that would cost them when Evan Rutter knocked the ball away from Gebele on first down from his own 7.  Wabash's Ethan Buresh was there to pounce on the loose ball in the end zone for the defensive touchdown.  That gave Wabash a 24-0 lead with six minutes left in the third, effectively sealing the Big Red's fate.

DU reached the end zone later in the quarter when Gebele scored on a 1-yard run that was set up by a 37-yard pass to Dushawn Brown on the first play of the drive.

Gebele finished 11-of-18 for 112 yards and one interception.  Brown was the leading receiver with two catches for 47 yards.  For Wabash, Rice was 18-of-30 for 210 yards and a score.  Zurek led the way with 16 carries for 105 yards and one touchdown.  Oliver Page led all receivers with three catches for 102 yards.

Wabash dominated time of possession, a category the Big Red are accustomed to controlling, 36:35-23:25.

On defense, Andrew Baird finished with a game-high 10 tackles.  Zach Neufeld had a big day, recording nine tackles, four tackles-for-a-loss and one sack.

Denison will close out its season next Saturday, Nov. 14 when they host Kenyon College at 1 p.m.
